She attended Kwong Avenue Primary School, Raffles Girl’s School and University of Singapore, where she qualified as a doctor. She travelled to the United Kingdom to train as a surgeon and was eventually appointed consultant orthopaedic surgeon at St Bartholomew’s Hospital, London. She set up the charity Medical Aid for Palestinians in 1984 and worked as United Nations and World Health Organisation orthopaedic consultant in Gaza. In 1987 she was conferred by President Yasser Arafat the 'Star of Palestine', the country's highest honour.
