He memorised the Quran at age 11. A broad-ranging scholar, he studied at the University of Punjab and later Cambridge University. He served as the Mufti of Penang and also District Judge of Singapore in the 1920s. A contemporary and friend of another translator of the Quran, Abdullah Yusuf Ali, Ghulam Sarwar completed this translation while in London.
